AMATEUR SPORTS MAGAZINE

Volume 1, No. 1

Who is Joe Williams?

Many folks associated with the Country Club Hill Cougars will tell you that if you want to know the history of the Cougars… go talk to Joe. He’s been around the longest. Recently Cynthia Fitch, of Amateur Sports News Network (ASNN), sat down with the Vice-President of Country Club Hill Cougars, Mr. Joe Williams (JW).

ASNN: When and how did you get started coaching the Cougars?
JW: In 1985. My wife and I used to take my nephew to practice and she volunteered me to help the team. This was before the Matteson Bears and Richton Park Teams were developed. Back then there were very few African American’s coaching the team. I think there were only 4 when I started, LOL! We later turned it to a family affair.

ASNN: What has been your biggest challenge?
JW: Getting parents to volunteer. Many parents just drop the kids off and keep going.

ASNN: This is a universal problem; we hear this from many coaches all over. Where would you like to see the organization in 3 Yrs? In 5 Yrs?
JW: Ranked the best organization/team in the Will-Cook League. In 5 years I want to see the Will-Cook League become the best league.

ASNN: What is your background in sports?
JW: I played Baseball at the Boys Club and Football for our neighborhood team the Trumbull Avenue Panthers on the West Side of Chicago.

ASNN: What do you want the kids to learn from the Cougar Organization?
JW: Sportsmanship. I want them to learn how to win or lose with pride. How to be a good person, and lastly how to handle situations that you can over power, and those that can over power you.

ASNN: What’s on your iPod?
JW: No iPod, I have a CD Player. I’d say my top three artists in rotation are John Legend, Alicia Keys…see I’m kind of hip, LOL! and my man Jerry Butler.

ASNN: Favorite Movie(s)?
JW: Sounder and Remember the Titans.

ASNN: Favorite Food?
JW: Chicken. Anyway you want to cook it…8 days a week. LOL!

|
ASNN: 1st Car?
JW: Ford Fairlane. Ok. Now you are telling my age.

ASNN: Favorite Pro team?
JW: Chicago Bears

ASNN: What is one thing about your team that most folks don’t know that you’d really like to share?
JW: New York Giants Pro Football player Danny Clark #55 came through our program. 4 years ago he purchased the uniforms for our team. That’s why you see DC/55 on one of the shoulders. We are so grateful for his contribution.

Joe, it was our pleasure meeting you. Thank you for your time and best of everything to you and yours from everyone here at Amateur Sports News Network.
