Here is our recap from championship weekend in Dekalb, IL.

CLASS 8A STATE FINAL
Naperville Central 13, Loyola 10
DEKALB - Decisions decisions.... in passed weeks, coach John Holecek made a few gutsy decisions that proved to be genius, but on Saturday night, it cost the team. Coach decided to attempt a field goal instead of going for it on fourth-and-goal at Naperville Central's 5-yard line with his team trailing 6-2 with 5 minutes, 39 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

"It was 5 or 6 yards, so it wasn't a gimme," Holecek said of the field goal attempt. "Obviously, (I) regret it now. But the defense was playing very well at the time. Momentum seemed to shift.

"I thought if we kicked the field goal it would be a one-point game, a good stop and field position. That was the safer choice at the time. In hindsight, we should've pulled it."

Jake Kolbe was 8-of-15 passing for 140 yards for Naperville Central. Michael Kolzow had four catches for 71 yards and Ben Andreas had three receptions for 71 yards. Kevin Clifford ran for a team-best 40 yards on 11 carries.

For Loyola, Penn finished 30-of-40 for 238 yards passing and also ran 12 times for 50 yards. Owen Buscaglia had 12 catches for 91 yards.

The title was the second for the Redhawks in their third trip to the finals.

CLASS 7A STATE FINAL
Mount Carmel 30, Lake Zurich 0
DEKALB - Matt Domer and Mount Carmel's offense crashed the party.

Domer, an Illinois recruit, rushed for a game-high 176 yards and two touchdowns to help Mount Carmel to a 30-0 victory at Huskie Stadium.

"We played grind-it-out, smash-mouth football and we eventually popped a few long ones today." Mount Carmel running back Matt Domer.

The Caravan, who won Class 8A last season, have 12 titles overall, including 11 under coach Frank Lenti. The program has won state titles in Class 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A.

"Every championship is special and we're proud to win consecutive state titles," Lenti said. "We had good senior leadership and we worked really hard all season."

Lake Zurich hadn't allowed more than 24 points in a game this season. The Caravan's 30 were the most the Bears had given up since Oct. 29, 2011 when they topped Geneva 35-32.

On the other side of the ball, Mount Carmel's defense, led by defensive tackles Enoch Smith Jr. and Steve Richardson, gave up just 3 yards on the ground and 11 passing after halftime.

"The defensive line was focused on stopping the run and the guys in the back were focused on stopping the pass," Richardson said. "We had a great pass rush and then had great coverage. It was good for us."

Key performers: Lake Zurich — Sean Lynch, 16 tackles; Colton Moskal, 11 tackles. Mount Carmel — Steve Richardson, 2 sacks; Marko Boricich, 3-for-4, 33 yards, 2 TDs.

CLASS 6A STATE FINAL
Batavia 34, Richards 14
DEKALB - Richards strength of a defense was no match for Batavia, who won its first state championship with a 34-14 victory at Huskie Stadium. QB1 Micah Coffey thrilled Batavia's boisterous boosters with 229 yards and two touchdowns on 15-of-18 passing, and Anthony Scaccia rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries in leading the Bulldogs (13-1) to their 12th straight victory.

"I always say we live and die with how our offensive line does," Coffey said. "In the beginning of the year our guys were a little young. We start three juniors and they've grown immensely throughout the year. They came out today and dominated the line of scrimmage in the first half, and that allowed us to get that big lead. I credit it all to our offensive line."
