Chicago Heights - Marian Catholic point guard Tyler Ulis confirmed all of the rumors Friday night by committing to Kentucky prior to his school’s football game.

Ulis simply said “I’ll be going to the University of Kentucky.”

He was an unknown point guard for Marian Catholic two years ago. Then Iowa came knocking. So did Michigan State and many others.

The 5-foot-8, 142-pound point guard, who led his team to their (Boys) first supersectional appearance as a junior, was long thought to be a Spartan until John Calipari showed interest and extended a scholarship offer during a visit last August.

Ulis took an official visit to MSU last weekend and immediately followed with an official to Kentucky Sunday-Monday.

"I made the decision a little before I went and visited," Ulis said. "I thought I was sure, but I wasn't quite sure, so I wanted to go to the other campuses and schools to see what was going on there. Once I went to Kentucky, I knew that's where I wanted to be and I knew it was home."

"Me and my dad talked a lot about where I would go," Ulis said. "When I told him I wanted to go to Kentucky, he was there right behind me. I feel like I fit in great. It's a dribble-drive offense, and that's what I base my game off of. If I get some players around me, we should be really good."

A four-star prospect, 247Sports ranks Ulis the No. 12 point guard in the nation and No. 4 prospect in the state of Illinois. He averaged nearly 22 points and five assists per game while shooting 55 percent from inside the arc and 38 percent on 3-pointers. His 1,567 career points are a school record, and he’s on pace to pass the 2,000 plateau this season.

“He’s a great basketball player,” Marian Catholic coach Mike Taylor said. “He came in with a group of kids that are all similar in how competitive they are. As each year’s gone on, they’ve all progressed and learned to play well with each other.”

“Kentucky is the top basketball program in college basketball right now,” Ulis said.
