The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced Tuesday that both head coaches and several players from Leo and Seton Academy boy's basketball team have been suspended one game after a fight that occurred in a game between the two schools on December. 20.

According to the IHSA, Leo and Seton Academy representatives will meet with officials from the IHSA later this week to discuss additional penalties.

“We’ll comment after we speak to the IHSA,” Seton Academy athletic director Deon Tolliver said.

The IHSA announced additional punishment Thursday for the boys basketball programs at Seton and Leo high schools, stemming from an altercation during a boys basketball game on Dec. 20.

The two players — one from each school — responsible for the altercation have been suspended indefinitely and must complete the National Federation of State High School Association's online sportsmanship program before they are considered for reinstatement.

Additionally, the basketball program and head coach at each school — Leo's Noah Cannon and Seton's Justin Domingo — will be placed on probation.

"I understand the need for crowd control, and sportsmanship should be the No. 1 criteria of interscholastic activity. It's a clear violation when you have an incident like we had. But I'm a little disappointed we were given the same punishment as Seton,'' Leo President Dan McGrath said. ''From my vantage point, the young man from Seton was the instigator. Obviously, we're going to comply with the IHSA's ruling."

The IHSA hasn't named the players to be suspended yet, but announced that Leo coach Noah Cannon and Seton first-year coach Justin Domingo have been suspended. Both teams are scheduled to play in Thursday’s McDipper Holiday Tournament at Rich South, with Seton taking on King at 9 a.m. and Leo playing Joliet Central at 4 p.m.

"These actions have no place in athletics at any level and will not be tolerated,” IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman said in a statement.

The Seton-Leo game on the 20th was halted and eventually cancelled with 6.6 seconds remaining in regulation with Seton leading 49-47 after a Seton player punched Leo’s Kiwan Smith in the face and both benches emptied and a brawl broke out when fans ran onto the court.

You have to remember in April, the IHSA ruled that then-Seton coach Brandon Thomas, now an assistant at Kankakee Community College, may have no involvement with Seton or any other school during postseason games played during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years for his conduct at halftime and during the postgame awards ceremony in the Class 2A state championship game loss to Harrisburg.

Thomas resigned from his position in mid-May after a 71-25 mark in three seasons.
