Vikings' season is over!

Say it's NOT so... but top-ranked Homewood-Flossmoor girls basketball team and ALL of its players have been disqualified by Illinois High School Association (IHSA) for violating rules.

In addition, the team has been stripped of ALL of its wins (20-2 record) during the 2013-14 season.

Coach Anthony Smith, who has reputation in the Chicagoland area of winning and producing college basketball players, had this team on target for a nice run at the state finals after his transfer from conference foe Bolingbrook.

But upon his arrival, four of his starters from last year's Bolingbrook team transferred to H-F. Two more girls who played on Smith's elite summer team also moved into the district. Three of the girls who transferred listed the same house in Flossmoor as their new address on paperwork filed with H-F Community High School District 233.

Furthermore, officials from the school district and the IHSA ruled last summer that all six transfers were eligible to play.

But soon there after, an unnamed player, who was bumped from the starting lineup from the recent transfers from Bolingbrook, family decided to sue District 233, in Cook County Circuit Court.

Under IHSA rules, coaches are not supposed to lure student-athletes to their schools, and school transfers are not supposed to be allowed solely for athletic reasons. There also are restrictions on how much contact coaches can have with players during the offseason. So, H-F officials conducted their own investigation.

From the beginning, Smith has denied recruiting players, but apparently, H-F found something that was a red flag.

Thus, the Viking cup runneth over with such an uncomfortable atmosphere, that today's ruling seemed inevitable.

Again, the Vikings girls basketball post-season hopes are over and all of their victories have been revoked.

No one from H-F, including Athletic Director Craig Buzea and coach Anthony Smith, were available for additional comments.

This was coach Smith's first season coaching the Vikings as he followed Bolingbrook's former athletic director, Alec Anderson, to the school. Anderson, 54, passed away last summer unexpectively.

Smith, who was one of five finalists for the Naismith girls high school basketball coach of the year award in 2012, and participated as head coach on the Girls 2013 McDonald's All-American team.

In the end, high school sports is supposed to be a privilege and an avenue to display / showcase athletic abilities on a level playing field. But acts like this are occurring too often, and in the end, it's the kids that are damaged by this.

It's just NOT worth it!
