Mustangs rout Dunbar...

Behind the play of Tyre Lee, who was injured most of last season, ran for over 200 yards and four (4) touchdowns...

“He’s a great guy to have back,” St. Rita coach Todd Kuska said. “He’s an explosive back. It was unfortunate that he got hurt last year, but we worked really hard to get back and he’s as good as he’s ever been.”

Maybe it was the field of play since this was the very first game on the new turf field at St. Rita, but whatever it was, whew, he put on a show!

The Mightymen got on the board 3 minutes, 26 seconds before the break, pulling within 21-8 on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Deomoria Harris (4-of-8 passing, 92 yards) to Rayqwon Erving and a Jon Charles two-point run.

Geneva holds off Richards

Behind the play of Daniel Santacaterina, NIU-recruit, and the passing game that gave them an early lead they didn’t relinquish, while the defense slowed down the high-powered Richards attack led by quarterback Hasan Muhammad-Rogers.

Santacaterina’s 74-yard touchdown pass to Pace Temple in the first quarter set the tone as the Vikings jumped out to a 14-0 lead and held on for the narrow win.

“We went to the air in the first half and it worked out for us,” said Santacaterina, who was 20-for-31 for 288 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. “We really relied on the offensive line to give us a push in the second half. The defense played incredible. That was an all-around win right there.”

Richards (1-1) hung around despite never holding the lead. A 13-play, 71-yard scoring drive capped by a 5-yard TD run from Muhammad-Rogers to start the second half cut the lead to 14-7.

“We played as hard as we could,” Muhammad-Rogers said. “We are definitely going to fight to the end, no matter what. We’re not going to give up on the game.”

Geneva sacked Muhammad-Rogers five times, limiting him to eight rushing yards.

Sandburg wins!!!

Avery Verble earned a shot at a start on opening night, in teh rain, but that didn't phase him at all. After his play Friday night, he likely has the job permanently now after leading the Eagles to a 27-14 victory Friday over host Andrew.

He directed the team by completing 13-of-18 passes for 219 yards and one TD each to0 Lavelle Johnson and Adam Valiga.

“I felt great,” Verble said. “The team played great and the offensive line blocked excellent.”

Jim Robley and Josh Sheldberg had rushing scores for Sandburg, which improved to 1-1.

East defeated Central

The ground game proved too much for Central in the downpour as they win 23-15.

East running back Liam Morrissey carried the ball 53 times for 265 yards and three touchdowns in the contest.

“It’s not just one guy, but we do have a next-man-in philosophy,” East coach Rob Zvonar said. “I don’t think anyone exemplified that better than Morrissey — awfully proud of him. He’s just a big, tough back. A grinder who falls forward on contact. On a night when the passing game didn’t go like it went a week ago, he got the tough yards.”

Crete comes up short... 14-7

The game was scoreless at the half as both teams struggled to establish an offensive rhythm including three combined touchdowns were each set up by turnovers.

The Warriors (1-1) created the first break at the start of the third quarter when Marshaun Williams broke around the right edge and blindsided Evanston’s 6-4 junior quarterback Matt Little, who fumbled. The Warriors’ Omari Stringer picked up the loose ball and returned it 33 yards for the 7-0 advantage.

With 9:16 left in the game, Jalen Jenkins made a jarring hit that separated the ball from scrambling Crete-Monee junior quarterback Frank Douglas. He pounced on the ball and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown as the Wildkits went on to 14-7 victory in Evanston.

“I knew I had to make a play,” he said. “I had to do anything in my heart or in my power to get a win for coach King.

“I hit him, the ball popped out and I grabbed it.”

This proved to be a BIG play that iced the game and the win for Evanston.

Rice wins the Battle of Pulaski against Marist

After two tough losses against the the RedHawks, the Crusaders answered with a 27-20 victory in the 35th meeting.

The Crusaders (1-1) didn’t waste any time jumping on the scoreboard, much to the delight of an overflow crowd that withstood an at times pouring rain, which resulted in a 75-minute delay.

The Crusaders rewarded their fans’ loyalty on the game’s first series. Rice drove 65 yards, with quarterback Alex Alarcon (12-of-28, 168 yards, 3 interceptus) connecting with Jones on a 38-yard pass and Jones producing a 17-yard run.

Five plays later, Alarcon busted in from 1-yard out for a 6-0 lead at 9:36 of the first quarter. The 2-point conversion try failed.

“We saw some openings and we took advantage,” Marcus Jones said.

Marist (1-1), however, evened the score at 6 with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter when Jawill Aldridge scored practically untouched from 30 yards. The RedHawks’ point-after kick was no good.

The Crusaders closed out the first half in impressive fashion as Jones whisked in from 16 yards out at 9:08 of second quarter for a 13-7 lead after the first of three point-after kicks by Matt Pikowski.

A nine-play, 46-yard drive on Rice’s ensuing possession, capped by a 17-yard run by Jones, upped the advantage to 20-6 advantage with 4:02 left in the opening half.

“It’s a great rivalry,” Rice coach Brian Badke said. “We’re very happy. A win is a win.”
