Three fantastic games... one field... one ball... who has enough to snag a win?

Caravan fall by one in opener

NOTE: MaxPreps Game of the Week

BIG game... BIG stage as Chicago's powerhouse Mount Carmel played host to East coast powerhouse St. Joseph Prep on Sunday in their opener at Toyota Park. The visitors outlasted the Caravans 28-27 in the end.

St Joe's Olamide Zaccheaus (Virginia) and John Reid (Penn State), both scored two touchdowns apiece, including a 38-yard TD run and 50-yard TD catch by Mr. Zacheaus. This proved to be too much for MC.

Reid finished the game with 6 catches for 116 yards and 2 TDs.

The Caravan rushed for 349 yards and produced touchdown drives of 72, 80, 54 and 71 yards including Jacquan Buntyn, who led the way with 160 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

"A lot of people thought we were going to get blown out by this team, but we came out and played hard," Buntyn said. "Our offensive line made a lot of good blocks and we had a lot of good runs. We just have to practice hard and get ready for next week."

With 2:23 left to play, Buntyn ran the ball in from 5 yards out, making the score 28-27, but the extra point was wide left, resulting in the final score.

The Caravan's A.J. Lewis carried the ball 14 times for 122 yards.

Best takeaway for this game for the Caravan is that they still have a very realistic chance of repeating as state champions... and they shouldn't see another team with as many playmakers as St. Joseph's Prep (Pa.) for the rest of the season.

Up next for MC... Morgan Park Friday night at Gately Stadium.

St Ignatius 41, Payton 0

As a longtime assistant coach at Mount Carmel, John O’Connor has been a part of plenty of wins.

But as a head coach? Not one.

Until Sunday that is.

In his first game as St. Ignatius’ head coach, O’Connor saw his Wolfpack roll to a four-touchdown halftime lead on the way to a 41-0 victory over Payton at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.

“It’s always nice to get the first one out of the way,” O’Connor said with a smile. “We’re trying to build a football tradition at St. Ignatius, and we’re going to do everything we can. We’re never going to be satisfied.”

St Rita 28, Simeon 26
“We’ve got to get better,” Kuska said. “Hats off to Simeon, that was a great football game.”
