Homewood-Flossmoor 35, Stevenson 27

Statement game....

Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings (2-0) are for real as they upset higher ranked Stevenson 35-27 on Friday night in front of a capacity home crowd. Senior quarterback Ronald Johnson led the way with 174 yards passing, including three touchdown passes and a rushing score. "We've got no limits on this offense. We can do whatever we want," Johnson said. "Coach (Craig) Buzea is a great offensive coordinator, probably one of the best in the state or the country," After trailing 28-7 in the third quarter, Stevenson (1-1) cut it to 28-21 with a pair of touchdowns by Danny Nowak that were set up by good kick returns. The Patriots also got the ball back on their own 20 with 5:01 left to play but turned the ball over on downs. Senior running back Taje Smith added 156 yards on the ground including a 33-yard touchdown run. This touchdown sealed the deal for the victory. On the other side of the ball, Stevenson's Willie Bourban (23-for-42, 245 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) then connected with Alan Velev for his second TD pass to provide the final score but it was too little too late.

Marist scores early and often to defeat Brother Rice
Marist snagged a tough victory against South Side neighborhood rivalry battle with Brother Rice, 49-35, on two turnovers.

The Crusaders got things going on a quick out between Matt Page and wide receiver Chris Rozell that resulted in an 84-yard touchdown down.

But the RedHawks answered when Jimmy Smith blocked a punt, scooped it up on the Brother Rice 2 and took it into the end zone with 4:41 left in the opening quarter. Shortly after that, they scored again on a big hit by Rual Boles's that forced a Page fumble, and Mike Layer picked it up at the 2 and continued into the end zone, putting Marist up 20-7. Right before halftime, Ian Woodworth (22-of-34 passing, 196 yards, 3 TDs) tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Nic Weishar on a fade with 35.7 seconds left in the half enabled Marist to go up 28-7.

Woodworth connected with Flynn Nagel on a 16-yard TD pass, and Andreotti added a 2-yard scoring run to make it 42-7.

Marist turned ground game was solid behind the play of Peter Andreotti who finished the contest with 199 yards, 2 touchdowns.

Brother Rice was led by Chris Rozell with 2 TD catches.
