St. Rita believes...

CRESTWOOD - After a late start due to the first game going long, between Joliet and Jones, the table was set - Number 1 Sandburg vs. Number 2 St. Rita. Winner receives tickets to go downstate for Class 4A championship this weekend. Over 3,000 people packed the stands at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood on this humid, full moon night where they witness a wonderful game in which the Mustangs came from behind to win 6-4 in somewhat dramatic fashion.

Sandburg struck first in the first inning with a quick rally of 2 runs and 3 hits against undefeated Scott Marinier (11-0)  including an RBI infield hit by Lucas Fritsch, and an error. And in the second, the Eagles kept their offense going behind Tony Stramaglia who tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the second.

The Mustangs got back in the game in a slow, methodical strategy - believing in their teammates as well as in their coaches.

In the bottom of the second, senior, Illinois State bound, Angelo Burrage went deep to right. But in the fourth inning, the Mustangs kicked open the flood gates including an RBI triple by Burrage (2 for 2, two RBI's) which was part of a two-run rally that made it 4-3. "Coach told me to put the team on my back as a senior and play hard," says Burrage. "I recognized this could have been my last game and I'm not done just yet. I want that ring just like everyone else."

His dad shared with us after the game that "during his sophomore year, he was the last batter to bat and struck out. We've cried already. Tonight, we want to cry tears of joy." In addition, his mom shared " we taught him to never give up."

In the fifth, the Mustangs tied the game @ four on a two-out, full count single by Anthony Andres' who sealed the game against Mt Carmel this past weekend. He continued his hitting ways for the Mustangs playoff chances.

Junior, Kyle Stearns broke up the tie with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth and later scored on a

sacrifice fly from Dan Dispensa, which secured the victory for the Mustangs. "I felt good and relaxed at the plate," Stearns' said. "I saw a good pitch and I took advantage of it to help the team."

This is St. Rita's second state appearance in three years. St. Rita will face O'Fallon on Friday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.

In the mix of all of this, coach Zunica made a pitching change and brought in sophomore Joey Filomeno. Filomeno came in with a chip on his shoulder to care the team on his ailing back. In fact, he struck out 9 of 11 batters and no hits. This

includes striking out the side in the 7th inning. ‘‘I felt great out there,’’ said Filomeno.  ‘‘I was only supposed to throw 30 pitches, but no way I was going to let my teammates down.’’

‘‘I thought we had to get it together,’’ St. Rita coach Mike Zunica said. ‘‘The wheels were really falling off. But  we were able to look within and just believe - believe in each other and go out there and play like I know we can.’’  Coach also shared one of his common quotes during the season "if you guys can get dirty, so can I," and tonight, he sure did sliding towards third base to get Stearns down safely.

Even Coach Zunica got dirty during the game.

Payton  taking a lead on third base.

Other notable plays during their rally was junior Shane Conlon who hit a double in the second and a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and junior Mark Payton scored runs in the fourth and the fifth. "We just kept fighting and trusting in each other," said Conlon after the game. "Right now, we are happy for the victory and we are going to prepare for this weekend."
