Mustangs stampede the Caravan

CHICAGO -  The weather made it seems as if this was the big football rivalry, but on this unseasonable cool afternoon, the St. Rita Mustangs were taking on the Mount Carmel Caravan's on the baseball diamond.

Behind the hot hand of junior Shane Conlon (8-1), the Mustangs outpaced the Caravan 3-1 to win their third sectional title in six years. Conlon was pitching with lots of control as a result had a no-hitter going into the fifth.

Conlon had a game plan coming into the game and used it to perfection getting the Caravan players to pop the ball up all afternoon. We finished the game with three strike outs, three hits and no walks. "I put fastballs in on the hands," said Conlon.

"That's the best I've ever seen him pitch," said Coach Mike Zunica. "We knew he had that in him. He's a champion."

In the bottom of the third, Kyle Stearns' and Justin Kopale got the offense going for the Mustangs with a couple of singles, which led to Mark Payton who nailed a liner down the left field line for a two-run double off the hot hand of Mike Stirling (7-2).

"I was just trying to get the guys over," Payton said. "He left the changeup up, luckily."

In the fifth inning, the Caravan tried to rally and began hitting the ball very hard but right at players, including a sharply hit line-drive by Steven Bajenski's to Kyle Stearns' who leaped as high as he possibly could to retrieve for an out. Next up, Brad Myjak took one deep to left for the Caravan's only score on a 2-2 count. This cut into the Mustangs lead to 2-1. "I just left one pitch out there," said Conlon after the game.

On the Mustangs very next at bat, Anthony Andres supplied the Mustangs with an insurance at bat when he led off the bottom of the sixth with a homer to right-center.

"This is no shocker to us," Coach Zunica said. "He's (Andres) been our leading hitter all year. He's got confidence to go along with great athletic ability."

After the game Coach Zunica concluded that "he (Conlon) really stayed on offense, even though he was on defense. He attacked every hitter, got ahead in counts and just threw a gem."

Next up for the Mustangs is Sandburg, who has been ranked pretty high all season, Monday at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood at 7pm. The winner will receive a trip to the Class 4A state semifinals.
