High school guidance counselor, Bryan Craig, stepped down from his duties as girl's basketball coach, but remains on administrative leave, after the district became aware of a graphic book he'd written.

Craig has written a self-published book, "It's Her Fault," as an advice manual for relationships, but critics say it encourages promiscuity and exploitative sexual behavior.

"The easiest kill for a man is through the young lady with low self-esteem,” the Rich Central High School staffer wrote in one passage. "Of course some will feel this is taking advantage, and yes it is. The ultimate goal for a man is to do all he can to eventually be able to commit and submit to a woman’s power."

In another: "Even though I feel I’m beyond the highest caliber of men, I still have a weakness for cleavage."
District 227 officials, Board of Education President Betty Owens and Superintendent Donna Leak, released a statement Friday which expresses concern "about the potential impact the book will have on our students and our community."

It continued saying "our teachers and counselors are role models for our students and must comport their actions to this expectation at all times. We understand that our community rightly expects the highest level of professionalism and sound judgment from the people they entrust with their children's each day. In the coming days, we will be assessing the impact of Mr. Craig's actions on our students, our parents, our community and the School District."

Officials said "appropriate" action will be taken upon completion of that assessment.

But while many are shocked by the content in the book, others on Friday expressed support of Craig, pointing out his right to free speech and the respect he's earned from colleagues and students.

"He is very well liked and a good role model," said staffer Donita Monroe.

Student Lexus Perry urged people not to rush Craig. Though she hasn't read the book, Perry credits Craig for helping many students.

"I don't think anything he does outside of school should affect what goes on inside of school. He is a great counselor. People who did not have Mr. Craig as a counselor, they wanted him as a counselor because he would always have your back, no matter what," she said.

At the time of this writing, Craig declined comment.

Last year Craig, who has led the school’s varsity girls basketball program since 2008, got into trouble with the IHSA after playing an ineligible transfer student. As a result, the team forfeited a majority of its regular-season wins.

Craig’s 44-page book is available online in paper and electronic formats at Amazon.com and can be purchased for $11.95, and a digital version of the book can be bought for $3.95.

Per the school district, this book will not be making any of the school’s suggested reading lists — but it’s getting attention, nonetheless.
