McDipper TOURNAMENT

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marian Catholic 75, Thornton 58, title

Tyler Ulis lead his team, Marian Catholic Spartans (10-1), to a 75-58 victory over seven-time McDipper champion, Thornton, to claim their back-to-back titles.

The Kentucky-recruit finished with game-highs of 28 points and six assists, and pulled down four rebounds for good measure.

“I had no thoughts in my mind we were going to lose,” said Ulis, who earned McDipper MVP honors for the second straight year. “Even when they were ahead 8-1, I had no doubt we were going to win.”

Teammates Josh Cohn and Terrone Parham provided quality support, finishing with 13 and 12 points, respectively. In addition, Ki-Jana Crawford was a force as well, adding nine points, seven boards and customary tenacious defense.

“It’s these kids,” Marian coach Mike Taylor said. “They just have a hunger and they love playing together.”

Tyler Ulis Tournament MVP

The Spartans went on a 13-2 run to start the second quarter that was the difference.

Thornton (7-4) got as close as nine on multiple occasions in the second half, the final time coming at the 2:41 mark of the fourth quarter when a Keondre Woods bucket made it 65-56. Woods finished with 15 points.

Any thoughts of a late rally were terminated when BIG man Jamani Pierce fouled out in the fourth at 5:20 mark.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Thornton’s Jamani Pierce, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. “But we played well overall. I know we’re a team that can make a run.”

Bolingbrook 91, Joliet Central 62, third
All of Bolingbrook (9-2) players were on display in the third palce contest at the McDipper, as they cruise to a 91-62 victory over Joliet Central.

Prentiss Nixon scored a team-high 19 points for the Raiders (9-2), but it was their trio of centers that proved impossible for Joliet Central (9-4) to contain.

Nixon came out on fire, canning three first-quarter treys and finishing the period with 11 points as Bolingbrook raced to a 21-13 lead.

“Throughout the tournament, I’ve been really off,” he said. “When that first shot went down, my confidence went through the roof. I felt like I was back to shooting the way I was a couple weeks ago. It’s rare that teams have really good bigs and guards on one team. That’s what makes this team special.”

Shakur Triplett (15 points, seven rebounds), Julian Torres (12 points, eight rebounds) and Kenny Williams (11 points, 10 rebounds) dominated the paint for the Raiders.

Jonah Coble led the Steelmen with 22 points.

Hillcrest Classic Tournament

Joliet Catholic 77, Bolingbrook 60 (CHAMPIONSHIP)

Nicole Ekhomu and Jasmine Lumpkin were everywhere Saturday for Joliet Catholic as the Angels dominated Bolingbrook in a 77-60 win to claim the Hillcrest Holiday Classic championship.

Ekhomu, was named tourament MVP, finished this game with 25 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals while Lumpkin finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and six steals for Joliet Catholic (11-0).

“This week, winning this tournament, it’s another obstacle in our way to where we’re trying to be at the end of the season,” Lumpkin said. “This was definitely a good win for us.”

Digging out of a deep hole, Bolingbrook had several charges left, but the hole proved to be too deep. Ekhomu ended the second quarter with nine points as part of a 12-0 run, a ridiculous crossover and pull-up jumper highlighting the spurt as JCA went up 46-30 at the half.

“We’re just not consistent yet,” Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith said. “Everyone hasn’t bought into the team concept and system yet. We cut the lead, and then we individualize and get out of control.”

Ryaen Johnson (19 points, eight rebounds), Aysia Bugg (18 points, five steals) and Cierra Stanciel (10 points) led Bolingbrook (7-2) in the loss.

Hillcrest 71, Marist 59 (3rd PLACE)
