Dolphins
too deep for Thunderbirds
CHICAGO
- The featured game of the Class 4A supersectionals puts two teams
that are familiar with each other. Young comes into the game with a record
of 23-9, while Hyde Park has a record of 27-4. The Thunderbirds have been
yearning at a chance to display their talents on a stage like this.
Earlier in the year, the Thunderbirds play North Lawndale for the city
championship. The game went into overtime but they fell
short.
Young came
into the game with a couple of uncertainties in regards to two important
injuries, Anthony Johnson (ankle) and Ahmad Starks (wrist).
On this evening, Young used its
size and depth to earn a trip to the Class 4A title run in Peoria with a win
of 62-47 victory over Hyde Park Tuesday night at Chicago State.
An example of this little known player
Stanford Brown, who has been able to step right in and help Young get a
win over De La Salle and Morton, and tonight was no different. The
6-foot-8-inch senior, knocked down 20 points and 15 rebounds. "Coach
told me in the locker room to first play of the game you have to dunk to
show that we're serious," said Brown, who did just that on the opening
possession. "Everybody on this team comes to play." |

Hyde
Park made a run in the second period behind the play of Jerome Moore,
who finished with 13 points, and Anthony Dixon who had 14 points. The
Thunderbirds cut the lead to 9 points, 49-40, with about 5 minutes left
to play, but this was short-lived. As stated above the bench of Young
went deep tonight |
and other
players stepped up, like freshman guard Derrick Randolph, who hit a big
three-pointer and Anthony Johnson, who ignited the crowd and his team with
two thunderous dunks.
The length
of Young's bench might be considered one of the best in the State and should
help them go deep into the title run.
Chris Colvin
finished the contest with 14 points, while Marcus Jordan added 10 points and
8 boards.
