Dolphins
are swimming up stream to State Title
NORMAL
-
Friday night’s final match up
was between heavily favorite Whitney Young Dolphins (31-1) and the Geneva
Vikings (32-0). The Dolphins are returning
to the state championship game for the eighth time with a victory of 63 - 42
over the Vikings. “I
thought we played nine minutes of our style of basketball,” Coach Irvin
said. “We didn’t execute early and I told them at halftime we needed to
limit touches for a couple of their players and push the tempo.”
The Dolphins came right out
scoring and took a big lead of 20- 7 in the first quarter. Porsha Harris
and Ashlee Anderson both showed that experience does help on big stages
with both players having double-double statistical games. |

The undefeated Vikings were not going down without a fight. Taylor Whitley
hit two three-pointers to energize the team which cut Young’s lead at the
half to 22 – 21.
“At the beginning, we were nervous and our shots weren’t falling,” said the
second team all-state player. “But even in the fourth quarter, we didn’t
give up. We just kept playing our game.”
This proved to be so true… with 2:41 left in the third, the Vikings took
their first lead of the game, 31 -30. But the Dolphins answered back with an
8-0 run including two three-pointers by Harris, who finished the contest
with 14 points and 17 rebounds.
“We had experience and when we got down, we knew how to get back up through
intensity and defense,” Anderson said during the press conference.
During a quick break in the game Coach Irvin lit a fire with second team
all-state player Chanise Jenkins, who “wasn’t in the game,” Coach said.
After this, well, Jenkins became the torch that we are familiar with causing
two key turnovers and hitting two baskets.

Whitney Young’s principal Dr.
Joyce Kenner rolled her sleeves up and cheered the team on to victory.
It’s De Ja Vu all over again…. Young will face Bolingbrook in the Class 4A
state title game Saturday night and we’ll be courtside…. Hope to see you
there!!!
