Wildcats rebound in state finals

PEORIA - In their 23rd state tournament appearance, the Wildcats (30-2) bounced back from their semifinal loss to Young and defeated Dundee-Crown 73-52 for their program's 11th state trophy. Thornton was fueled by senior forward Richie Thompson who finished the contest with 18 points and 7 boards. "I'm just proud that we came down here," Thompson said. "There were other talented teams that never got the chance to come here, so I was proud that we achieved our goals to come Downstate. … When I went up into the stands, it was because I felt lots of love ever since my freshman year. I had to show my love back."

The little known Dundee-Crown (24-7) team, who were making their first appearance downstate, didn't go down with a fight before senior Jamal Gray cooled their run with hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final 1:18 of the opening period. Gray finished with 14 points.

The shots were part of a 15-2 Thornton surge that broke a 17-16 Wildcats deficit and included an 8-0 run to open the second quarter. Thornton held Dundee-Crown scoreless for over 4 minutes in the quarter.

Thornton extended its lead to 45-29 by halftime following seven straight points from Reggie Smith and a basket at the buzzer by Michael Buckner. Dundee-Crown could not recover.

On the other side of the ball, the Chargers were led by senior Jeff Beck who had 18 points and five rebounds, followed by senior Marcus Henry who had 10 points.

Coach Jackson shared with us what he told the team in the locker room, "that loved them. We have come a long way, and if they needed anything, don't hesitate to call."
