Morgan
Park Basketball coach accused of paddling
Story courtesy of Chicago Tribune.
CHICAGO
- Another Chicago Public
Schools coach has lost his job as a result of an investigation into alleged
illegal corporal punishment at its high schools.
Mandel Oliver is under investigation by Chicago Public Schools officials for
an alleged paddling incident of a varsity boys basketball player and no
longer is the coach at Morgan Park, its principal confirmed Thursday.
"He is under investigation for an incident that happened during the fall of
the 2007-08 school year," Morgan Park Principal Beryl Shingles said. "Yes,
it involved paddling one of his players. Beyond that, I don't want to say
any more and risk tainting the investigation."
Earler this month, WBBM-Ch. 2 reported on several alleged incidents of
paddling at Simeon Career Academy, which resulted in the resignation of a
boys volleyball coach.
More students from Simeon and other Public League high schools stepped
forward with claims of abuse after the report, which prompted a citywide
investigation by CPS officials. Corporal punishment has been illegal in
Illinois since 1974.
Chicago Public Schools Chief Arne Duncan has said anyone found paddling
students will be fired.
WBBM cited investigations into alleged paddling incidents at as many as five
CPS schools, including Simeon, Phillips and Marshall.
"There are a lot of rumors, a lot of stuff going around right now," Marshall
boys basketball coach Courtney Hargrays told the Tribune on Thursday. "I
can't comment except that soon it will all come out."
