Leo Lions survive a scare...

CHICAGO - In the first Class 3A supersectional game featured Leo (26-4) and Brooks (26-6). This game pitted the senior James Pointer and the veteran team up against the younger, less known squad behind sophomore guard sensation George Marshall.

In the end, experience defeated youthfulness. 51-48 win Tuesday night in the Class 3A supersectional at Chicago State.

Brooks took an early lead and held on to it until the fourth period, when Leo knocked down nine straight points to pull even at 39-39 with 5:52 left in the game on a lay-up by James Pointer's.  The Lions took their first lead (43-42) on a basket by Malcolm McFarland with a little more than 3 minutes left. In the

game, Brooks led by as much as 11 on two separate occasions and by as many as nine with 1:07 left in the third quarter.

"We weren't panicking; we just started off slow," said Leo senior guard James Pointer, who scored a game-high 16 points. "Coach  told us in practice this week it was our time."

Brooks stayed close down the stretch behind the fueled play of  sophomore George Marshall Jr., who finished the night with 14  points, and the rebounding of twin sophomore forwards Kevin and Keith Gray, both had 10 boards apiece,

Coach Chris Head of Brooks guided Westinghouse to the Class AA to a title in 2002 and has done a wonderful job starting four sophomores. Brooks made their name heard and many teams will fear playing them next season.

Leo moves on the to Class 3A semifinals this weekend in Peoria and will play Oswego (25-6) on Friday at 1:45pm.
