Public League vs Catholic LeagueCHICAGO - With only four teams left (Lane Tech vs. Hubbard; Loyola vs. De La Salle), championship distinction was on the line and an opportunity to play at Soldiers' Field.Story courtesy of Chicago Tribune sports (
Lane advanced to its first Prep Bowl since 2004
with the victory at Hanson Stadium. After the teams battled to a 7-7
halftime tie, Lane's defense and special teams sparked three scores in the
decisive third quarter. Linebacker Gregory Walker sacked Hubbard quarterback
Quincy Skanes for a 10-yard loss at Hubbard's 3-yard line, forcing a punt.
Lane took over on the Hubbard 22, and running back Luis Negron's 1-yard TD
run seven plays later gave Lane 14-7 lead. On the ensuing series, Lane
defensive lineman Anthony Jantke recovered a fumble on the Hubbard 12, which
led to a 28-yard field goal by Carlos Dominguez with 3:19 left in the third.
On Hubbard's third possession of the quarter, defensive lineman Andre
Alvarez recovered a fumbled punt snap in the end zone for a 24-7 Lane lead
with 57 seconds left.
After a scoreless first quarter, Loyola took a
13-0 lead into halftime after Leo Sheridan connected on field goals of 24
and 25 yards and Loyola quarterback Lucas Ruske hit tight end Joseph Gross
with a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Sheridan kicked a
26-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Loyola running back M.J. Puch
scored on a 1-yard run to give the Ramblers a 23-0 lead with 6 minutes 7
seconds left in the game. De La Salle quarterback Tom Lally's 50-yard
touchdown run with 3:09 left spoiled the Ramblers' shutout bid. Loyola's
defense held De La Salle to 148 total yards and did not allow a first down
in the first half. So, Loyola will face Lane Tech this Friday, November 28, 2008 at Soldiers Field at 10am.
