Homewood-Flossmoor win opener against rivalry

What better way to kick off the season than with a victory especially under adversity.  Our number 2 Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings (1-0) held off Marian Catholic's (0-1) late rally in a victory Friday night 18 - 13 and Amateur Sports News Network was there (number 5 for YourSeason.com).  After overcoming some  adversity, HF came into the game with five players not available - two injured and three suspended plus the uncertainty all week as to where the game will be played.

The Vikings field is still under renovation. The field itself is in good shape with the new FieldTurf but the stands are still being re-constructed.

Standout Senior Michael Buchanan (LB-TE)  caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from QB Doriane Reese. "A lot of guys stepped up," Buchanan said.  Buchanan has his eyes on several college options including but not necessarily in this order, Arizona, Illinois, Minnesota and Purdue.

Sophmore running back Lantz Sims scored on a 33-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Second year coach Kenneth Smith said to us "the boys were able to deliver a win just by simply working hard."

In addition, during the half-time performance, both cheerleading squads, Homewood-Flossmoor and Marian Catholic, provided the crowd with a mirror image cheer. Cheerleading Director of Homewood-Flossmoor, Jenna Arbelita, explained to us that both teams attended the same cheer camp this past summer and learned the routine, and decided that it would be neat to do this routine.

Vikings have thirteen returning starters to fill their roster: Cody Albano, OL; J.T. Brown, DL; Michael Buchanan, LB-TE; Evan Davenport, DE; Zach Fulton, OL; Nick Hay, CB; Jeff Lepore, CB; Michael McWorter, CB; Alex Mitropoulos, TE; Aaron Phillips, RB; Dorian Reese, QB; Chris Staten, OL; John Thibideau, OL.

ASNN will continue to keep our eyes and ears wide-open for any and all news pertaining to the Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings.

And finally, the Vikings won the inaugural trophy presented by Southtown Star.

Fans Perspective
Arifa Brookins, senior at Homewood-Flossmoor
"Hopes the team will win homecoming this year as well as State Championship."
