School Football - Week 5
Fenger
dedicates win in honor of coach’s wife Week 5 kicked off with a special
dedication for south side football coach over at Fenger, Albert Cruse’s
wife, Cynthia, who lost her battle with cancer. Coach Cruse decided to
coach the team on Thursday evening in a Heartland Conference victory
over Crane, 30-0 at Rockne stadium. As difficult as it was to coach the
team one day after burying his wife, this is what she “demanded us to
do,” said Cruse.
‘‘We [The three of us] had this discussion many times, this is not what
she asked us to do; it is what she demanded us to do.” They
also has a son, Al Jr., who plays for Hubbard.
The Rockets
blast pass Olympians
In an important Southland Conference battle,
the Rockets pulled out the rec league playbook to win the game 14-6. They
got on the scoreboard first on a perfect halfback pass from Darryl Anthony's
to Johnnie Jones in the back of the endzone. "It was a last-second
thought," Anthony said. "I was going to run, but saw (Jones) open. It's
rare, we only use it when we need it. I just had to get the team momentum
up."
In the second half, the Rockets came out with a 12
play, 80 yards drive that concluded with a short run by Jeremiah Dyer (20
carries, 80 yards). The Olympians got on the scoreboard with a short
power run by senior Giorgio Bowers (14 carries, 69 yards). They fail on the
extra point attempt.
To lock down the victory, Josh Dyer, yup Jeremiah's
brother, made an interception with a little more than 3 minutes left in the
game. Then the offense was able to drain the clock.
"The (halfback pass) worked out," Rich East coach Barry
Reade said. "We practiced that all week and I decided that was the time
to use it. For us, it was a playoff game. we couldn't afford to go 2-3
and then have win out."
Southland Conference breaks a
record!!!
On a wet, foggy, and muddy homecoming evening, the
Stars took on the Blazing Trojans. This game was truly playing in
between the tackles with both teams running the ball consistently.
The Stars struck first on a touchdown run and took the early lead 6-0 on
a run by Shaquille Jones.
The Blazing Trojans got on
the board via their special teams play in the second quarter when Aaron
Ivory blocked a punt and ran it to the house.
Then, history was made...
Sam(antha) Angell successfully made
the extra point. This wasn't just a regular extra point... This was the
first female place kicker to successfully kick an extra point.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Now, back to the game... the Stars marched down the field
and was able to connect with several big runs by Thomas Mathias and
Shaquille Jones. Unfortunately on one possession, the Stars powered
their way down the field into the red zone, but fumbled the ball at the
goal line - recovered by Bloom with 6:26 left in the third. They were
not able to score on this possession. The quarter concluded with the
score of Bloom 13 - Rich South 12.
The Griffins show why they are force in the Blue... Homewood-Flossmoor
- Coming into this Southwest Suburban Blue contest, the Vikings (0-4) was
without 6 starters including quarterback Tim Williams, who has more than 600
yards in the air at this time, due to a wrist injury. This made the contest
very difficult, not to mention according to coach Kenneth Smith,
"Lincoln-Way East (4-0)
is head and shoulders above everybody we've seen.
Nothing against the teams
we've played -- we've played two 4-0 teams and a 3-1, and those are good
teams -- but Lincoln-Way East is one of the top teams, if not the No. 1
team, in the state."
On the
other side of the ball,
the Griffins have averaged
49 points in their last three games. In addition, the
maturity of Ryne Van
Gennep, who discovered the hard way that playing quarterback isn’t as
glamorous as it is often portrayed,
has
catapulted the team
in the top 5 rankings and a serious contender for the Class 7A title.
"A lot of years he
would have been talented enough to start as junior, but he had an
all-state kid (Spencer Stanek) in front of him," Lincoln-Way East coach
Rob Zvonar said. "We're real proud of Ryne. He was in that position for
the first time in his life, and instead of wasting time he kept working
to improve and learn the system.”
"The
group of guys around me are great athletes," Van Gennep said. "That has
made the job easier. Not playing last year, I did a lot of studying. I
really watched Spencer, what he did and what he was good at."
His waiting and
studying paid huge dividends where their offense just exploded against
the Vikings on three straight
second-half possessions to break things open.
defensive pressure
"We had a little adversity with some
injuries this week," Griffins coach Rob Zvonar said. "We don't feel
like we played our best and still put up a pretty good score against
an H-F team that played hard all night."
Of which, their second half scores came
courtesy of Gennep, who finished 13-for-27, 228 yards and threw a
32-yard scoring pass to Brandyn Jackson and tossed a 9-yard
touchdown pass to Alex Evans (4 catches, 119 yards) to make it 29-0
with a quarter to go.
On the other side of the ball, the
defense behind Ryan Herman, who returned an interception 94
yards for a touchdown and Ryan Hickey blocked a punt to give it an
early 9-0 lead.
The Vikings', Malik Norman, did have an
outstanding showing for 152 yards on the ground on 16 carries.
Hawks soar over
Indians In
this key, undefeated contest, Hillcrest
(4-0) took on Lemont (4-0). As
history states, the Hawks are 0-for3 against them. Overall, the Hawks needed
to use their speed
offense
and not let the Indians
overpower them on the line. On the other side of
the ball, the Hawks needed to stop the power running of
Lemont's running back Danny
Hayes, who finished the contest with 57 yards on 21 carries and one score,
as well as stop the steady rotation of quarterbacks the Indians' use.
On this wet night, the Hawks pressed and
pressed and sent the game into overtime where quarterback Herb Offord
(11-for-22, 174 yards, 1 TD) told coach Sutton he wanted the ball.
Sutton gave him that chance. Offord turned the opportunity into a 16-10
upset of No. 16 Lemont.
After a pile of players fell over the goal line, none
of the referees made a call. Finally, the side judge gave the
touchdown signal and the Hawks pulled off an amazing come-from-behind
win. They beat Lemont (4-1, 1-1) for the first time in four meetings.
"I kept pushing and pushing with all my might," Offord said of his
quarterback sneak attempt.
Caravan
cruise... Whew,
coming off a defeat at
home last week against unranked Loyola, the Caravan (3-1)
came out focused. Mount
Carmel has relied heavily on RBs Denzel Thompson and Milton Greer who
carried the team with over 100 yards.
In
addition,
QB Chris Sujka showed the
huge crowed that he’s capable of rebounding
and leading the team in the
right direction against the
Meteors squad. But tonight the
defense stepped up behind the play of Chris Barcelona. Be was able to
recover a fumble deep in the Caravan red zone, sack the quarterback and get
a interception that was return 90 yards for a score. Talking about the sack
and fumble, Barcelona said "He bobbled a
quick snap and I had a blitz on, so I just got my helmet on the ball."
It was noted that
De La Salle (4-0) circled this
game when the schedule was released.
More specifically
QB Juwan Martin
needed to
flaunt his arm and legs
to pull out the win.
