High School Football - Week 3

Morgan Park wins in final seconds...
In front of a nice size crowd at Gately Stadium including Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose, former Simeon alum, the Mustangs prevail with late heroics 29-28.

Simeon controlled over 3 quarters of play until Morgan Park rallied back with a short touchdown run by Devontre Spears with a little more than 6 minutes left in the game. Then, late in the third, the Mustangs marched down the field for a goalline run by Daeshan Hurley with 52 seconds to play cut the deficit to 28-27. Decision time... extra point and play for overtime, or go for it all? Veteran coach Lexie Spurlock rolled the dice and went for it all.

The extra point was bobbled, and sophomore running back Brandon Peppers picked up the ball and ran in for the game-winning two-point conversion. So, was it planned or positively botched?

Live Interview with Coach Spurlock

‘‘Give the young guy a lot of credit for having enough composure to know we had to get the ball in the end zone,’’ Morgan Park coach Lexie Spurlock said.

Spears also had a 16-yard touchdown run.

On the other side of the ball, Wolverines' Robert Gregory had a 32-yard touchdown run and a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jasper Golden and Horation Banks ran for two touchdowns. On this evening, Simeon missed eight players that were suspended after a fight during a Sept. 4 game at North Chicago.

And finally, the Dolton Bears were also in the stands tonight.
