Week 5 has passed and it means we are official at the halfway mark of the season, and right now, more than a dozen local teams have become playoff-eligible by getting off to 5-0 starts. Among them, put 5-0 Bolingbrook and Lincoln-Way East on the same field during week 6. Whew - Second-ranked and defending Class 8A champ Raiders have won 12 straight since losing 20-14 to Lincoln-Way East in Week 6 last year (2011).

Lincoln-Way East is forreal, or did they take advantage of a key injury? In short, the Griffnis upset the number ranked Raiders 42-19 in Frankfort Friday night as Illinois-bound Aaron Bailey sat on the sideline with a knee injury.

Bailey only took two snaps before suffering what is believed to be a sprained right knee. Bailey said the pain "isn't that bad" and plans to have an MRI Monday. He was on crutches on the sideline for the rest of the contest.

Tom Fuessel, a Northern Illinois recruit, stood out and showed why he is a valued quarterback in Illinois. He rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 56 yards and a score, doing most of his damage in the first half when the Griffins built a 35-7 halftime lead.

"Any time an All-American goes out it's going to hurt you, and that's what he, is an All-American," Lincoln-Way East coach Rob Zvonar said. "It would be the same thing for us if Tom Fuessel went out.

"With that said, I thought our kids caught some fire tonight. It was as good as we've been in all three phases."

Bolingbrook's offensive struggles in Bailey's absence were understandable, its defense couldn't stop Fuessel, who scored on runs of 30, 17 and 10 yards and connected with running back Nick Colangelo (10 carries, 122 yards, TD) on a 33-yard touchdown pass as the Griffins took advantage of Bolingbrook's aggressive pursuit.

"He's a real good player," Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow said. "They have a real nice team. We knew that. I don't think we played well. Physically, we got beat a couple times, and we turned the ball over a couple times. Field position was big."

Bolingbrook's Omar Stover finished the game with 10 carries, 117 yards, and a TD.

Now for the Griffins, everything flows throw QB Tommy Fuessel, a Northern Illinois recruit, who already have signature wins over Montini, Carmel, Homewood-Flossmoor and Sandburg.

Another marquee matchup is between Loyola and Mount Carmel Friday night at Gately Stadium.
Oh what a night... as Loyola knocks off Mount Carmel in overtime 30-27. What an incredible football game!

Mount Carmel (5-1, 1-1 Catholic Blue) appeared to have a victory well within reach after Don Butkus hit Jason Gasser with a 15-yard touchdown pass with just 56.5 seconds left in regulation, but Pujals and the Ramblers refused to quit.

The game came to an end when Peter Pujals (30-for-42, 337 yards, 3 TDs; 1 rushing TD) flicked an 8-yard touchdown pass to Luke Ford (8 catches, 73 yards, 2 TDs) in the front corner of the end zone.

"It was hard to watch on the sidelines (in the 4th quarter) ... as long as we get the ball back, we feel if we execute we can score any time," Pujals said.

"We just had a horrible taste in our mouth (from the Jesuit game, a one-point loss)," Ford said. "(Pujals) got everyone together before we came out. He just said keep it in your mind right now that we're scoring. This isn't the second week of the season. We're going to overtime and we're going to win it."

Don Butkus threw for 116 yards for Mount Carmel, including six completions on an 80-yard touchdown drive on the possession after Murphy's fake punt score.

  HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 49, Lockport 7
There is no place like home...

After two tough losses the Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings rallied early and often over Lockport Porters with a 49-7 win.

Ronald Johnson (11-of-17 for 165 yards, 1 INT) tossed five touchdowns and ran for one in the SouthWest Suburban Blue contest Friday night including his first one where he rolled right and then threw across the field to Taje Smith for a 37-yard touchdown.

“We realized after those two losses that it was unacceptable,” Johnson said. “We had a really good week of practice and came out focused.”

Shortly after that, a fumble recovery by Vikings Michael Johnson, the quarterback was at it again as he hit Willie Ross (five receptions for 84 yards) for an 18-yard score and a 14-0 lead with 9:10 left in the first quarter.

“It felt good,” Johnson said of the onslaught. “I’m the facilitator and the offensive line was blocking great. It’s easy when you have time back there.”

Johnsons' final pass of the night was his only one of the second half, an 11-yard scoring strike for a 42-7 lead.

Isaac Cutrara relieved Johnson at quarterback on the next series and capped the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown scamper with 5:49 left in the third quarter.

Lockport got on the board when Tyler Johnson ran the ball into the endzone from 16 yards out. That score made it 28-7, but that was it for the Porters.

“Their speed and skill kids took it to us,” Lockport coach Don McKillip said. “After the game was the first time all season I had to address the team and not talk about fighting for the playoffs. It’s been tough on them, tough on me and tough on the other coaches.”

The Vikings are now 4-2, 2-2 and play Joliet Central back in Homewood next Friday. You re-play the game below and follow the action on your Smartphone or tablet by clicking here.
