Big Catholic Red Battle....
coming Christmas 2012
Hales
20, Leo 12
(2OT) It took double-overtime to decide this Catholic League Red rivalry contest between Leo and Hales, and in the end it was the home team, Spartans, on top 20-12 when on fourth and goal from the 16-yard line, Donovan Jenkins lobbed a ball to the left corner of the end zone that saw Jamari Goodman out-jump his defender and cradle the ball away for the Spartans. This was his only catch in the contest but it couldn't have been bigger. "I knew I could catch it all along," Goodman said. "I just went up and got it." But this terrific, hard-fought game was almost overshadowed due to an incident in the stands where Leo linebacker, LeVern Johnson, spotted his mother in the middle of a scrum along the sidelines. He immediately reacted by taking his helmet off and ran to go and defend her. His teammates and people along the sideline were able to stopped him, but the senior was penalized and ejected from the game for removing his helmet on the field. "The
player’s mother was getting hit and he reacted to
it," Leo coach Michael Holmes said. "That hurt us
but it also hurt that we didn’t put them away when
we had a chance."
In overtime, Yenka Sykes, for
the Spartans, scored in the first overtime. Leo
matched his score on a 15-yard touchdown from
Latrell Giles to Kerron Bragg on fourth down. But the catch from Goodman sealed the deal. "Jamari scored thirty touchdowns as a sophomore and junior so we knew he could do it," Townsel said. "We knew they would double-team Joe Morrow so we went to Jamari." There was a second incident also between the fans in overtime. This heated rivalry his an all-time high as far as athletic play, but his the ultimate low in amateur sports. Lions - Spartans you guys are better than this... please get things together before basketball season... if not, this will not end in a positive manner.
