First-team offense
Quarterback
CHARLIE GORO, Maine South, Sr., 6-2, 192: Completed 74 percent of his passes
for 3,171 yards and 38 touchdowns and rushed for 665 yards and 12 touchdowns
in leading the Hawks to the Class 8A title. Oral commitment to Vanderbilt.
Running backs
MARK KACHMER, St. Francis, Sr., 6-0, 190: Suburban Catholic Conference's top
offensive player rushed for 1,988 yards and scored 33 touchdowns in helping
the Spartans capture the school's first football state championship.
MICHAEL RATAY, Geneva, Sr., 5-10, 205: Most prolific rusher in the state ran
for 2,855 yards, piled up 3,124 total yards and scored 47 touchdowns as the
heart and soul of a Viking team that finished second in 7A to East St.
Louis.
GARY WILSON, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin, Sr., 5-8, 185: Breakaway
threat had 1,676 rushing yards, 1,964 total yards and scored 33 TDs--including
three in 6A title-game victory over Lemont.
Wide receivers
TERRY HAWTHORNE, East St. Louis, Sr., 6-1, 185: Illinois-bound game-breaker
caught 48 passes for 1,009 yards and 27 total TDs that included four on
interceptions and four on kick returns for 7A champion. The two-way standout
also had 74 solo tackles and averaged 45 yards per punt.
JOHN LANTZ, Sacred Heart-Griffin, Sr., 6-3, 190: Had 70 receptions for 1,237
yards and 26 touchdowns that included four on kick returns, three on punt
returns and a 103-yard interception return. State champion who averaged 48.3
yards per kickoff return has offers from SIU and EIU.
Offensive linemen
SEAN CASCARANO, Glenbrook South, Sr., 6-6, 262: Central Suburban South's
top offensive lineman helped Titans go 8-2, had 24 pancake blocks and has
made an oral commitment to Virginia.
JIMMY HOLTSCHLAG, Quincy Notre Dame, Sr., 6-7, 315: Top-rated Downstate
lineman was has offers from Northern Illinois, Illinois State and Western
Illinois.
TREVOR ROTHSTEIN, Lemont, Sr., 6-1, 270: South Suburban Blue's player of the
year paved the way for the 6A runner-up's offense that averaged 365 yards
and five touchdowns per game. Has made an oral commitment to Army.
PATRICK WARD, Providence, Sr., 6-7, 290: Northwestern-bound standout is
among the state's top student-athletes with a 35 score on the ACT and paved
the way for the Celtics' run to the 6A semifinals.
CHRIS WATT, Glenbard West, Sr., 6-4, 290: State's No. 1-rated recruit was
named Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year and selected to analyst Tom
Lemming's All-American team. Helped lead the Hilltoppers to 7A semifinals
and has made a commitment to Notre Dame.
Kicker
BRENNEN VanMIEGHEM, Metamora, So., 6-1, 175: Set state record with 82
PAT kicks in 85 attempts this season. He also converted 6 of 9 field goals
(long of 44 yards).
First-team defense
Defensive line
CORY HOFSTETTER, Geneva, Sr., 6-4, 260: Ball State, NIU and Western Illinois
are pursuing the Western Sun's defensive player of the year who helped lead
the Vikings to second place in 7A.
ROOSEVELT HOLLIDAY, Bolingbrook, Sr., 6-3, 300: Southwest Suburban Blue's
top defensive player wreaked havoc despite constant double-team blocking. Is
being recruited by Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan State among others. He
scored on a 68-yard run after stripping the ball from a Lincoln-Way East
running back.
THEO ODOM, Glenbard West, Sr., 6-0, 240: Anchored a defense that was a big
reason why the Hillltoppers stayed so close to East St. Louis in their 7A
semifinal. Odom finished the season with 22 sacks.
TY PHILLIPS, East St. Louis, Sr., 6-2, 260: Some consider him the Flyers'
best college prospect after this standout dominated opponents with 108
tackles that included 17 sacks. Illinois, Nebraska and Kansas State are his
top college choices.
ZACH TIMM: Maine South, Sr., 6-3, 220: Central Suburban South defensive
player of the year doubled as a right tackle for the 8A champion. Had 19
sacks. He scored a 35 on the ACT and is expected to play in the Ivy League
next year.
Linebackers
PAT DANSDILL: Wheaton Warrenville South, Sr., 6-1, 192: Latest in the
linebacking legacy at WWS, the DuPage Valley's top defensive player wound up
with 106 tackles and five interceptions--returning two for touchdowns.
MARTY HOPKINS, St. Rita, Sr., 6-3, 240: Physical hitter in the Catholic
League tradition had 117 tackles, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and an
interception as the Catholic Blue's top defensive player. Has made an oral
commitment to Iowa.
KYLE ZELINSKY, Bartlett, Sr., 6-1, 225: The Upstate Eight defensive MVP
helped lead the Hawks to the 8A semifinals and has offers from Air Force,
Ball State, Akron and Western Michigan.
Defensive backs
COREY COOPER, Proviso East, Jr., 6-2, 200: Explosive two-way athlete who has
committed to Illinois had 60 tackles and four interceptions while catching
40 passes for 700 yards and six TDs. He returned two kickoffs and two punts
for scores.
TIM RILEY, Oswego, Sr., 6-3, 230: Southwest Suburban Prairie's offensive MVP
ran for 1,574 yards and scored 26 TDs while doubling as a safety on defense.
Ranks No. 4 in his class. Committed to Northwestern.
EZRA THOMPSON, Lincoln-Way East, Sr., 6-2, 195: No. 2 defensive player in
the Southwest Suburban Blue behind Holliday, the Miami of Ohio-bound athlete
had 80 tackles, two INTs and 16 pass deflections
Punter
DAN ORSESKE, Brother Rice, Sr., 6-2, 210: Some rate him among the best
punters in the Midwest after averaging 41 yards per attempt for the 8A
quarterfinalist. Oral commitment to Minnesota.
