Where do you start exploring the nurturing side of being a father when it comes to sports? As many say, everything begins with mom but dad's role is found on ESPN.

Here's some of the most famous father-and-son (and daughters) sports combinations we could find...

Doc and Austin Rivers

Doc spends a couple seasons with the Knicks during a solid NBA career, but now he's best known for leading the Celtics to an NBA title in 2008 and for being the father of one of the game's rising stars. Austin, rated the nation's top prep player, will join the Duke Blue Devils in the fall.

Cal Ripken Sr., Cal Ripken Jr., and Billy

Former Baltimore Orioles great Cal Ripken Jr., left, gets coached by his dad Cal Ripken Sr. during a 1992 game. Ripken Jr. played his entire 20-year MLB career with the Orioles a feat rarely done in modern baseball.

Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr.

Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., left, chats with his dad, Ken Griffey Sr. of the famed "Big Red Machine" Cincinnati Reds at the 2006 World Baseball Classic. In addition to the Reds, both men also played for the Seattle Mariners.

Controversial San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds shares a special moment with his father, the late Bobby Bonds who also played for the Giants, after Barry hit his 500th career home run in 2001. Bobby Bonds passed away in August of 2003.

Thompson's

The younger Thompson revitalized the Georgetown basketball program his father once ran.

Ali's

She says her father, boxing legend Muhammad Ali, is excited about becoming a grandfather again and her boxing career. “My dad is an excellent grandfather,” notes Ali. “He loves kids. He loves to kiss them to death.”

Like his daughter Tamika, Harvey Catchings was a defensive whiz during his years in the NBA. The two are seen here posing with her Defensive Player of the Year award in 2005.

Brett and Bobby Hull

Former St. Louis Blues hockey player Brett Hull and his father, NHL Hall of Famer Bobby "The Golden Jet" Hull, attend Brett's 2006 jersey retirement ceremony in St. Louis, Mo.

Mario, Michael and Marco Andretti

The Andretti family became the first family to have five relatives (Michael, Mario, Marco, Jeff, and John) compete in the same series (CART/Champ Car/Indycar).

The Boone's

Calvin and Grant Hill

Former NFL Pro-Bowl running back Calvin Hill, left, cheers for his son, Grant, at a Duke University basketball game. Grant, who has been plagued with injuries for most of his NBA career, is currently playing for the Phoenix Suns.

Trevor and Wayne Gretzky
The Great One's son avoided his father's long shadow by playing other sports (seen here at Oaks Christian HS in California) instead of lacing up a pair of skates. He'll try to carve out his own identity in the sports world in baseball after being picked by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round of baseball's 2011 amateur draft.

Sandy, Sandy Jr. and Roberto Alomar
The eldest Alomar's progeny are quite familiar to Mets fans, as both Roberto (r.) and Sandy Jr. have had memorable stints with the team.

Cecil and Prince Fielder
Baseball's bashing big men, former Yankee Cecil (l.) and son Prince will long be remembered for their prodigious home runs. And waistlines.

Felipe Alou and Moises Alou
Former MLB great Felipe Alou, left, who skippered the San Francisco Giants from 2003-06, is seen managing his son, outfielder Moises Alou. Both men share a rare record of hitting 20 home runs during a single season.

Howie and Chris Long
Chris is a defensive lineman for the St. Louis Rams and was the No. 2 pick of the 2008 NFL Draft. Long started all 16 games of the 2010 season and recorded 8 1/2 sacks, but still has a long way to go to catch his Hall of Fame, Hollywood-hunk father, Howie.

Bill and Luke Walton
Few NBA personalities match that of larger-than-life broadcaster and ex-Trail Blazer great Bill. His son, Luke, is blazing his own trail on the West Coast as a contributing member of the Lakers' back-to-back NBA championship teams.

Ken Norton Sr. and Ken Norton Jr.
Ken Norton Sr., left, may not have lent his heavyweight boxing skills to son, Ken Norton Jr., but Ken Jr. stayed in sports carving out a stellar career as a Dallas Cowboy linebacker. Ken Jr. is currently the assistant head coach at the University of Southern California.

Darryl and D.J. Strawberry
New York baseball fans have had a roller-coaster relationship with ex-Met and Yankee Darryl over the years, but The Straw Man was nothing if not endearing when seen with his son, D.J., who now plays pro hoops in Lithuania (after collegiate career at Maryland).
