week 1 - Will-Cook-Kankakee youth association
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?
Well, it's that time again... The weather has just began to cool off some here in the
Chicagoland area, kids are back in the school, and nonetheless, teams in the
Will-Cook-Kankakee Football League kicked off this weekend. Plus the WCK welcome two new organizations
into the family: Chicago Heights Panthers and Park Forest Hurricanes.
Week 1 is in the books. What a way to get things started for the Will-Cook-Kankakee Youth Association! First and foremost, Mother Nature provided bright, sunny skies over the entire Chicagoland area, which brought out big crowds through out the league. Amateur Sports split time during opening weekend in Matteson and Richton Park, where we witness some good, old fashion football. In the opener, the Markham Mascots got the fans energized with a game starting run for over 70 yards on the opening play for a score. Not to be out done, the Bears Mascots answered right back with a long run of their own. In the end, the Patriots out scored the Bears 12 -6. Check out the game highlights by clicking here. Unfortunately, two teams, Markham Patriots Widgets and PeeWees, had to forfeit their opener. |

Up next were the free-spirited,
fun to watch JV team coached by Darrell Bridges.
Each year, coach Bridges adds some gadget plays and
lots of motion, and this year was no different.
Rolling out a quad set to the right, he pulled his
QB in a two set draw for an opening big gain, and
from there, the Patriots didn't let up on the Bears
scoring three times in the first half including a
long pass which set up the third score. At the half,
the score was 19-0. In the second half, the Bears defense held them tight only allowing one more score, on a 45 yard reverse play, but the offense couldn't do enough to get the team on the board. Final score was 31-0. Up next for the JV Patriots will be South Holland Jets. Game highlights can be send by clicking here. In the final contest of the abbreviated day (varsity), Norvell Nauden's coached his first game as head coach. Coming into the season, coach Nauden looked forward to seeing his kids overall knowledge of the game grow. Well, this weekend showed him that they are paying attention, after losing two pre-season games, the team came out with something to prove. The Bears got on the board first with a short run to the end zone near the end of the first quarter, taking an early lead with they never let go. The Patriots answered only once, in the second quarter on a brilliant run for over 45 yards narrowing the score to 7-6, but the Bears answered right back right before the half with a 65 yard burst down the field. During the game, both teams were rusty and proved undisciplined early with lots of penalties including at one point, the Bears had back-to-back-to-back illegal procedure calls. "Yeah early we just were not concentrating," said coach Nauden. "But once the kids settled down, we were able to play our game." The Bears scored two more times to receive their first victory of the season 26-6. Up next for the Bears is a trip down to the new stadium belonging to Eastside, Saturday, August 27 at 11am. Highlights of the varsity contest can be seen by clicking here. And finally, we were able to get out and see one of the newest teams in the league, Park Forest Hurricanes, play the Richton Park Raiders. Again, in front of a nice crowd over at Rich South high school, the Raiders played host to the Hurricanes and tried their best to introduce them not only to the league but to the Raider way. In the Varsity contest, it was all Raiders. The offense was just too much to handle and the Boyd twins put on a show on both sides of the ball. Final Score was 33-0.Highlights are available by clicking here. Main Page |
