Great opening night for both teams - Hillcrest Lady Hawks and Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings, but in the end, it was the Lady Hawks squeaking out the victory 70-62.

Senior guard and Southern Mississippi recruit Samirah Ali led the team with 22 points followed by Dana Gettis who added 19 points.

“The last two years we haven’t started with a win,” she said. “So I wanted to come back this time and get one.”

Hillcrest led by as much as 37-18, but the home team, H-F, took things one basket at a time can rallied back including a brief lead of 54-52 with 6:12 left in the fourth quarter.
“We kind of came out flat and made some mistakes,” Vikings coach Dana Noble said. “We didn’t play strong with the basketball and it cost us, got us into a hole.

With senior Jahmia Phillips out with leg cramps, the team turned to Mariam Awoniyi, who snagged a couple of key boards and put backs. Her efforts game the Lady Hawks the breathing room they needed to seal the contest.

The Vikings were led by Charnelle Reed had 19 points and eight rebounds, Danielle Woolfolk 10 points and Lauren Parker and Sydni Johnson nine points each.
