HILLCREST SECTIONAL
Hillcrest 61, Oak Forest 34

Girls 3A sectional Hillcrest knocks out Oak Forest 61-34. The Lady Hawks disrupted just about everything the Bengals wanted to do Tuesday night jumping out to a 13-0 run and only giving up 4 points in the first quarter.

“Basically, you can sum it up in one word. Urgency,” senior Jasmine Sanders said after the Hawks’ 61-34 victory. “Our Class of 2012, this is our last year, so we’re just trying to make a push to finish the season on a win.”

Oak Forest did find their offensive rhythm late in the second half on a 9-0 outburst, that included a three-pointer by Brianna Getzloff, to avert a complete runaway, 31-13, until Dana Gettis made a strong move to the basket.

“We needed to come out composed, but we still had to make sure we did the right fundamentals,” Oak Forest coach Steve Schanz said. “We didn’t in those times, and against Hillcrest … give them a lot of credit. They came out with a little extra pep to their step and really took it to us. It took us a while to recover from that, but I think our girls ended the game the way we usually play.”

The Bengals outscored Hillcrest 14-10 in the fourth period.

Seton Hall bound-Shannise Heady led Hillcrest with 12 points followed by Sanders, who added 10 points, and Samirah Ali, Mariam Awoniyi, Jahmia Phillips and Dana Gettis all added six.

Kelly McEathron led the Bengals with nine points.

“Oak Forest is always our biggest rival in conference,” Heady said. “It’s always a good game between us. That’s why we came out ready to play, we came out focused.”

Hillcrest advanced to Thursday’s sectional final in a rematch against last years foe Morgan Park who knocked off Rich Central 74-50.

Morgan Park 74, Rich Central 50
The trip for Morgan Park to the south suburbs Tuesday night was well worth as they knocked off Rich Central 74-50.

With key player Debra Jenkins on the bench with back spasms and Gabrielle Richmond out for most of the season with a knee injury, the Mustangs played an uptempo, physical game behind the play of senior Kendyll Nunn, who put up 25 point and 10 boards.

“It’s day to day with her,” a smiling Mustangs coach Thomas Johnson said after their 74-50 victory. “She’s like Derrick Rose.”

She had a good first half, scoring 11 points, but a physical battle in which few fouls were called resulted in a lot of frustration under the basket.

Rich Central did make a strong run late in the half to cut the deficit from 32-22 on a 8-0 run but it wasn't enough, as Morgan Parks' sophomore Shami Goodman was a scoring machine as she added 24 points to compliment Nunn's play.

The Olympians were by Chaz Duson, who scored 20 points.

“Yeah, that was rough,” Olympians coach Bryan Craig said. “It felt like we ran out of gas. But overall, credit Morgan Park. Kendyll found her shot. That’s what I was trying to avoid. Once she found it, it was kind of downhill from there.”

Morgan Park (21-9) advances to Thursday night’s sectional final against Hillcrest. Yup, it's a R-E-P-E-A-T from last year.

Momentum is defined as the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. In sports a team that has the momentum is on the move and is going to take some effort to stop. Thus Tuesday night, Lincoln-Way East gained their momentum right before halftime when junior Meaghan McMahon banked in a buzzer-beating 35-footer which game them a give point lead over Homewood-Flossmoor at halftime. This momentum carried over to the second half as they pulled away and snagged a 54-41 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor in the Sandburg Sectional semi's.

Taylor Johnson and Caitlin McMahon combined for 22 second-half points.

“Being a captain and a senior, I definitely wanted to step up and be a leader,” Johnson said. “Meaghan’s shot really helped our excitement level go up even more. That was definitely a game-changer.”

The Vikings were without their leading scorer, Charnell Reed, due to a knee injury. So Danielle Woolfolk and Amena Brent scored 10 points tried their best to carry the team. In addition, Lauren Parker (6 rebounds) and Sydni Johnson added seven points each for H-F.

“Our kids played as hard as they could,” H-F coach Dana Noble said. “We had some shots that could have turned momentum for us, they just weren’t falling tonight.”

East will meet Marist in Thursday’s sectional championship.

Now the question is can this momentum be carried over to Thursday night against a dangerous Marist team?

BOYS BASKETBALL
Thornwood 57, Andrew 55
Upset? maybe - maybe not!!! Tueday night Thornwood definitely surprised a lot of people with a 57-55 victory over highly ranked Andrew.

Andrew frustrated Johnte Shannon (Thornwood) for most of the game with pressure defense and knocking him off of his spot. Coach Paul Slavich could sense he was frustrated.

“I told him, ‘Stay calm, you’re going to get your shot and you’re going to knock it down,’ ” Slavich recalled.

And Shannon listened... he nailed the game-winning "three" with 11.5 seconds left to secure the victory.

“That’s the same thing people have been telling me growing up, to keep my head up and to not get down,” Shannon said. “We needed that shot.”

Loyola-recruit Darrel Combs (24 points) missed a jumper and the long rebound landed in the hands of Robert Blissitt near the free-throw line. Blissitt hit Shannon with a pass near the left corner. The trey marked Shannon’s only points on the night.

“I’ve been on the varsity four years and I’ve never had an experience like this,” Combs said. “I’m just so happy. We bonded, we clicked and we’re rolling.”

Jubril Adekoya did everything in his power to lead Andrew (21-2, 11-2), scoring 26 points and adding 10 rebounds. But his attempt at a game-tying shot in the final seconds never was realized, with Thornwood’s David Fuller stripping the ball from Adekoya before he could get off a shot.

Glorind Lisha contributed 10 points for Andrew, which was attempting to win its first conference basketball title.

This victory assured the Thunderbirds (19-6, 12-1) at least a share of the Red Division crown, their first since 2002. If Thornwood defeats Thornton on Friday night, it wins conference outright.

The top-seeded RedHawks trailed for most of the first three quarters. They fought through some early butterflies and a determined Spartans squad to seize control with an 18-0 fourth-quarter burst.

Leah Bolton had 25 points and 8 rebounds, Randyll Butler had 13 points and 9 rebounds, and Claire Ryan added 6 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals for Marist (31-1). Ashton Millender had 16 points and 6 rebounds, and Amber Williams added 13 points and 6 rebounds in the MC (21-12) loss.

Simeon 59, De La Salle 51

The Wolverines are now 6-0 against the other top teams in their sectional after disposing of De La Salle 59-51 in the finale of the City-Suburban Showdown on Saturday night at Proviso West in Hillside.

Jabari Parker had 23 points and 14 rebounds and Kendrick Nunn added 14 points and three steals for Simeon (26-1), which did not fall victim to a letdown the night after celebrating its first city championship since 2007.

"It is a lot of confidence going in," Parker said. "But like Coach Rob (Smith) said in the locker room, we can't end up like Benet did last year, losing to a team that wasn't ranked in the top 10, so we have to keep on playing hard and keep on playing smart.

After combining for just two first-half points, juniors Gavin Schilling (10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Marcus White (14 points, 3 steals) breathed life into De La Salle (15-6) after halftime.

On the ropes throughout but never quite out, De La Salle got within 44-37 on a strong move by Schilling with 6 minutes, 10 seconds to play.

White then hit a pair of 3-pointers to cut Simeon's lead to 54-49 with 1:38 left before the Wolverines sealed the victory from the foul line.

"It was kind of personal for me," Parker said. "My brother (Christian Parker) went there. He really didn't get an opportunity over there, so I really wanted to give it to them."
