It's almost that time... time for Illinois high school football playoffs. In our case, five wins may get team in playoffs. When determining which teams with 5-4 records qualify for the playoffs and which don’t, the tiebreaker is total wins by a team’s nine opponents.

In other words, "strength of schedule."

The more wins your nine opponents have, the better chance you have of qualifying.

Right now, many teams are fighting to get a spot at the table.

BLOOM at MARIAN CATHOLIC, 6:00pm
Simply put, bragging rights for the South Suburbs!!!

Providence vs. Mount Carmel at Gately, 7:00pm
A good old fashion Catholic Blue game which could give the Celtics their first conference victory, or provide the Caravan with another seven win season and momentum heading into the playoffs.

EAST MOLINE UNITED at RICH CENTRAL, 7:00pm
Rich Central needs a win to qualify for the playoffs. As tempting as it is for the Olympians to allow QB Devonte Black (96-of-172, 1,576) to fire the ball all over the field, too much is at stake. Central has to find a way to establishing a rushing attack, which would open up the passing lanes for Black and his receiving crew, led by Shawn Mitchell (31 catches, 752 yards).

THRONTON at ANDREW, Friday 7:15pm
This is a battle for the title.

Thornton travels to Andrew on Friday night with the SouthWest Suburban Red at stake. Lincoln-Way West, also with the same record (5-1), needs to defeat Bradley to take part in the championship.

Thornton will have to be road warriors if the Wildcats are going to claim back-to-back Red honors. The Wildcats main concern is containing Thunderbolts quarterback Tyler Hook and running back Jarvis Franklin. Hook is coming off a performance in which he completed 19-of-23 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns against Lincoln-Way North.

“He’s one of the best quarterbacks I’ve seen this year,” Mosel said. “The running back is very talented and he’s playing linebacker, too. The key for us is to not being able to allow them to control both sides of the line.”

Andrew hasn’t played a team with as much speed as Thornton.

Sophomore quarterback Jowahn Brown has passed for 933 yards in just four games. Running back Jamal Towns has topped 1,000 yards on the ground.

Defensively, linebackers Jaumarl Clark, Dominick Bryant, Mike Morris and Willard Cotton have wreaked havoc most of the season. Malcolm Majors anchors a defensive line that will attempt to pressure Hook. The Thunderbolts might want to also stay away from cornerback Jason Towns, a playmaker who also lines up at wide receiver.

JOLIET CATHOLIC at MARIST, Friday 7:30pm
East Suburban Catholic showdown should feature a pair of explosive offenses: Joliet Catholic (7-1, 6-1) has a 1-2 rushing combo of Northwestern recruit Malin Jones and Ty Isaac who have scored 56 or more points four times this season. On the other side of the ball, Marist (6-2, 6-1) has made a habit of dramatic wins, getting eight touchdown passes from Ian Woodworth in a 64-63 double-overtime win at Carmel last Friday after beating St. Patrick on a field goal as time expired in Week 7. Thus, a must see game Friday night!

CRETE-MONEE at RICH EAST, Saturday 12:00pm
If the Warriors defeat the Rockets, they will win the Southland title - PERIOD!!!
On paper, this should be an easy victory for the Warriors especially with the Rockets stuttering down the stretch having lost to Rich South and then squeaking by Bloom on Saturday. In addition, they should have a hard time running the ball with Kenneth Kidd (77 carries, 517 yards) against Crete, and QB Malcolm Miller will have to show an ability to throw the ball and keep the Warriors defense honest. As we have witnessed, Warriors' QB Marcus Terrell (137-of-210, 2,082 yards) and WR LaQuon Treadwell (49 catches, 985 yards) have devoured opponents.
NOTE: if the Rockets win, they can obtain a share of the Southland title.

ST. RITA at LOYOLA, Saturday 1 pm
The Catholic League Blue title on the line... This season, this conference was known for its defense with three teams only giving up 11 points or less: Loyola, St. Rita and Mount Carmel. The Mustangs hope that this trend continues against a Loyola as their defense is led by Will McNamara, Charles Elmore and Pat O’Connor. The Rattlers, who have a fast paced defensive team, led by Darby Goodwin, Daveed Carter and Lars Lopatka. On offense, watch for elusive Loyola quarterback Malcolm Weaver and St. Rita’s Tim Lombard, who has emerged as a go-to runner.

During the month of October, 20% of ALL proceeds will be donated to Breast Cancer Research in my mother (in-law) Dorothy Fitch and sister (in-law) Dawn Williams names.
