It's make or break-it weekend and the scheduling gods put some really interesting rivalries and teams on the field at the same time.

Things get started Thursday night at 7p with Morgan Park playing Hubbard at Gately. This game has some public league implications attached to it.

Morgan Park Mustangs have found their stride as they come down the stretch of the season. The Mustangs played keep away and very physical against Hubbard to obtain their fourth victory (27-14) and the conference title.

"We have had a lot of kids playing varsity football for the first time this year," Mustangs coach Jeremy Gold said. "The last four games are an indicator of us sticking together as a team."

Morgan Park was led by Javon Bright who got into the endzone twice during the contest including on a 6-yard TD reception from Andre Newell midway through the first quarter. Charles Bournes carried the ball 18 times for 115 yards and 1 TD also for Morgan Park.

On the ensuing possession, Greyhounds quarterback Quincy Skanes found Ricky Backstrom down the right sideline on a long pass. Backstrom was caught from behind at the 3-yard line by Brandon Riley, who knocked the ball out of Backstrom's hands and through the back of the end zone for a touchback.

"That was a great hustle play by (Riley)," Gold said. "They're playing the game the right way and it shows."

Lucky Baar led the Mustangs' defensive attack with four sacks.

Quinton Skanes scored two touchdowns for Hubbard.

Now, for Friday Night lights...

Crete-Monee 30, Rich South 0
After a slow start in the first half (6-0 Crete), Crete-Monee opened up the second half with 3 consecutive scores securing the Southland victory of 30-0 against Rich South. The Warriors scored 24 second-half points behind the play of QB Marcus Terrell, who scored four touchdowns including a 5-yard keeper.

Also junior wideout LaQuan Treadwell sparked the Warriors down the stretch, hauling in four catches for 103 yards and a TD in the second half. He finished the game with 130 yards on eight receptions.

In a word... turnovers!!! Turnovers kept the Stars out of the contest and the Warriors were able to capitalize on each of them. For example, Stars fumble in Crete-Monee territory which shortly led to Terrell’s 38-yard TD strike to Brandon Sykes midway through the third quarter. Rich South muffed the ensuing kickoff, which Crete-Monee recovered at the 11. Two plays later, Terrell punched it in from 10 yards out.

Terrell also hooked up with LaQuan for a 38-yard TD in the third quarter.

Then the final turnover for the Stars was a fumble deep in Crete-Monee territory led to Kenneth Kidd’s 14-yard TD run with 1:58 left.

St. Rita 17, Mount Carmel 7
We went into this game expecting an offensive game but in the 89th meeting between St. Rita and Mount Carmel defense was the key. It was the Mustangs D who held the Caravan at bay for the 17-7 victory.

"We got some great fumbles in key moments," Mustangs linebacker Will McNamara said. "We got lucky a little bit. They put it on the turf for us."

McNamara recovered a fumble — the first of four turnovers the Mustangs forced — midway through the first quarter to give his team the ball at the Caravan's 27-yard line.

Two plays later, Zack Soria took a handoff and raced toward the right side before connecting with a wide-open Kenny Golladay in the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Mount Carmel responded with a 15-play, 79-yard drive that ended with Brandon Greer in the end zone after a 7-yard run early in the second quarter to make it 7-7.

The Caravan stopped themselves in the second half with three turnovers. Ryan Leonard put a big hit on Don Butkus to cause a fumble that was recovered by Jack Sears. Charles Elmore also recovered a fumble and Max Kurucar intercepted Butkus to ice the victory.

St. Rita will face Loyola next Saturday to determine the Catholic Blue champion.

Not only does this game put the winner in a driving seat going into the playoffs but it gives a team 365 days of bragging rights, which in most cases is more important.

Loyola 20, Brother Rice 13
In this week 8 match-up, undefeated Loyola can’t afford to look ahead to next weeks showdown against St. Rita because they are visiting the dangerous 5-2 Brother Rice team. Loyola came into Friday's game against Brother Rice on its mind and, as it turned out, first place in the Catholic Blue on the line.

The Ramblers escaped a furious comeback attempt in a 20-13 victory against the Crusaders. That, coupled with Rita's victory against Mount Carmel, set up next Saturday afternoon's showdown at Loyola to decide the conference champion.

"It's a big game to begin with, but with a championship on the line you can't ask for anything more," said Loyola running back William Palivos, who had 86 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.

The turning point Friday came late in the third when the Crusaders pulled within 13-10 on an 88-yard kickoff return by Martez Walker. A three-and-out followed by a botched fake punt by Loyola set up the Crusaders at Loyola's 34.

The Crusaders attempted a game-tying 30-yard field goal but it went wide right. Three plays later, Marquese Martin-Hayes caught a 79-yard screen pass from Peter Pujals to put the Ramblers back in control 20-10 with 18.6 seconds left in the third.

After a 40-yard field goal by Brian Kane with 59.1 seconds left, an onside kick attempt by the Crusaders didn't go 10 yards.

Loyola was led by Marquese Martin-Hayes, 5 catches, 129 yards and TD. Brother Rice was led by Pat Parilli, 24 carries, 86 yards and TD.

SANDBURG @ LOCKPORT, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Dexter Taylor played a big game in the victory over Sandburg 27-24. He opened the game with a 96 yard opening kickoff for a touchdown.. On top of that, he closed it with the game-winning one. Taylor scored on a 4-yard run in overtime to secure teh victory.

The victory improved the Porters to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. It was Lockport’s first win over Sandburg since 2006 and clinched the Porters’ third straight playoff berth.

Sandburg fell to 5-3, 3-3.

The Eagles scored in overtime on a 21-yard field goal by Ted Vergados.

Lemont 37, T.F. North 0
Lemont clinched the South Suburban Blue championship in huge victory over T.F. North 37-0 Friday in Calumet City.

The win, coupled with Tinley Park’s 42-26 loss to T.F. South, clinched the conference outright for Lemont (8-0, 5-0).

RB Mike Arizalone had 3 TDs on runs of 33, 10 and 3 yards for Lemont (8-0). Christos Giatras added 2 TD rushes of 40 and 3 yards.

“Winning conference is important to us, our kids and our program, so we’re excited,” Lemont coach Eric Michaelsen said. “We want to win it on our own though. We don’t want somebody else doing the work for us. We’re still looking to beat Oak Forest next week.”

Shepard 38, Evergreen Park 20
Jimmy McClinton was 13-of-16 for 224 yards and 3 TDs, Tommy Eyer had a 50-yard FG and WR Londell Lee had 6 catches for 130 yards and 2 TDs for Shepard.
