Frank Lenti entered the state record book with his 307th career victory over St. Joseph 62-8. Lenti became the state's all-time winningest football coach with a .850 winning percentage, surpassing former Richards coach Gary Korhonen.

But first to the game... the Caravan jumped out early and fast and the the Chargers couldn't catch up. In the first-quarter the score was 28-0 and from this, the first string were rotated out in the second quarter. On this short afternooon, quarterback Don Butkus threw three touchdown passes and totalled 72 yards. Draco Smith finished the game with just 2 carries for 42 yards and one TD.

By mutual agreement, the running clock was started with 6 minutes, 7 seconds left in the second quarter.

"We never talked about this during the week," Frank Lenti said. "This accomplishment is a tribute to the entire program. This is more than about just one person. Gary (Korhonen) is a walking legend. But I'm very proud of the fact that we did it in 28 years with the level of competition that we play."

Ironically enough, St. Joseph athletic department had a plaque already made up with the date on it congratulating Lenti on his accomplishment. That was one of three plaques that Lenti received in a brief postgame ceremony. His brother David Lenti and long-time assistant Pete Kammholz also received plaques for being the two assistants who have coached with Lenti for more than 27 years.

"Congratulations to him," said St. Joseph coach Anthony Griffin, who is in his first year as a head coach. "It's a great honor for him, and it gives us something to look up to."

FRIDAY
On the first crisp Friday Night lights, it was conference play time.... and this week put some the best teams on the field facing each other.

For us, things got started with Vikings hosting Griffins... both teams were undefeated.

The Illinois-bound J.J. Robertson (Lincoln-Way Griffins) put on a show in front of the sold out crowd, along with QB Blake Winkler, who went 9-for-14 for 295 and 2 TDs, of which 230 went to Robertson in the 38-21 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor.

Robertson got things started with a 50-yard reception which led to the Griffins first score on the evening.

"I'm not going to lie, I was extremely nervous," Robertson said. "Five-thousand-plus people. It almost felt like a college game. They put three different corners on me and they played me extremely physical. You have to fight around your obstacles."

In between Robertson's two big first-half plays, the Vikings had their chances.

Uncharacteristically sloppy play — four fumbles, two lost — by the Griffins helped put Tim Williams in position to throw two short touchdown passes to Sheldon Jones and give the Vikings a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter.

A fumble and short punt had Homewood-Flossmoor deep in Griffins' territory following the second touchdown, but momentum was about to change uniforms.

Several defenders ganged up on a 14-yard loss, and as soon as Lincoln-Way East reclaimed possession, Robertson caught a quick out from Winkler and did the rest.

"We needed that spark," Winkler said. "We'd been waiting for it all game. J.J. made a great play. He's a leader on and off the field."

The 6-foot-7 Williams, who had 10 touchdowns without an interception in the first three games, was 28-for-36 for 308 yards, but threw three interceptions to go along with three TD passes. Sheldon Jones finished the game with 11 catches for 90 yards and 2 TDs.

St. Rita 21, Brother Rice 17
On week 4 of high school football play, isn't perfect to have the Catholic League Blue put Brother Rice and St. Rita on the schedule. And this game didn't let anyone down in the 21-17 victory for the Mustangs.

Late in the fourth as the Crusaders were threatening to score, Charles Elmore intercepted a fade pass in the back corner of the end zone that sealed the deal.

"Charles is a big-game player and he made a big-game play," Rita coach Todd Kuska said. "It was a great atmosphere to play in and it was great to get a win on the road."

St. Rita's Kenny Golladay finished the contest with 7 catches for 137 yards and a TD. Andrew Walker for Brother Rice had 17 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown, followed by Martez Walker, who had 12 catches for 90 yards and a TD.

Terrell finished 17-of-30 passing for 317 yards and five touchdowns. Three of the touchdown passes went to Treadwell, who caught five passes for 135 yards.

“This was a good game offensively for us,” Terrell said. “But we know we still have work to do. We played good tonight, but I think we can play better.”
