Hillcrest boys are on the same path as their counter-parts, the Lady
Hawks as they knocked off their cross-town rivals 63-57.
“We want to have a trophy to go next to each other,’’ forward Eric Gaines said amid the celebration of players and fans on the court. “That’s our goal.’’
The Hawks were led by Gaines, who buried 18, followed by Herb Offord, who knocked down 13.
“We want to try and be like our girls and get Downstate,’’ forward Herb Offord said. “They’ve been telling us it’s our turn to get No. 1 because they couldn’t.’’
Hillcrest will face Robeson in the UIC Supersectional on Tuesday @ 6pm.
The game was tied at 49 midway through the fourth quarter when the Hawks put together a 9-3 run which secured the victory.
Hillcrest defeated Rich South last year for the regional championship at Hillcrest, so the Stars had the revenge factor.
Macari Brooks led Rich South with 13 points followed by Tyrone Allen and Darryl Hervy, who both had 10.

STATE PLAYOFFS
CLASS 3A
The Stars are still shining in the Class 3A playoff run as they defeat
T.F. North.

In this contest, an unlikely player gave them the push they needed... and that player was Kendrick Evans, who came off the bench and scored all 8 of his points in the fourth quarter.
|
The Meteors played a tough game as they tied the game at 41-41 when standout, senior Sean Montgomery put in an easy lay-up, but down the stretch turnovers kept them from scoring.
Montgomery led all scorers with 22 points. He also had 12 boards.

Macari Brooks was the high man for South with 12, followed by Tyrone Allen, who added 11.
As a whole, the Stars are looking forward to Friday night's match-up against Hillcrest since last season when the Hawks eliminated their playoff run in the regionals.

"Things changed for us on Dec. 29 after a loss to St. Joseph at (the
Proviso West Holiday Tournament)," Vikings coach Jim McLaughlin said.
"We started to figure out that we weren't as good as we thought, and we
had to make a huge commitment to the defensive side."
Plus, Thornton just didn't play even close to their season averages at
every spot. They shot 15-for-60 from the field; 1-for-15 from the behind
the arc; 11-for-22 from the charity stripe; and were out-rebounded
40-31.
"I kept hearing my guys talking about how long they were while battling
for rebounds, but we missed too many free throws," Thornton coach Troy
Jackson said. "Even with how poorly we played, if we just make a high
percentage of our free throws, it's a different game."
Marquette-bound Reggie Smith finished with 16.
