ASNN365 - Week 5 had just about everything in it for the Will-Cook football league as many teams celebrated homecomings and their 8 graders. In addition to these notes, there were ten teams coming into Sunday that are UNDEFEATED and when all of the smoke cleared, there were eight as South Holland (PeeWee) and Markham (Varsity) received their first defeats of the season. On the other side, three teams won for the first time this season: Riverside (Widgets), Matteson (Widgets), and Matteson (PeeWee).
But, we must say right now, week 6... someone will receive their first lose since these two teams are facing each other: Chicago takes on South Holland (Widgets), and Country Club Hills takes on Markham (PeeWee).
Our game of the week was between Chicago and University Park. First and foremost, Lions' family, thanks for all of your support and hospitality. We definitely appreciated it. Now to the games...

PEEWEE
This was a classic battle between field position and defensive strategy.
NOTE:
Jr. VARSITY
This game started out with both teams fumbling their first possessions. The
Lions settled down first and began slowly moving the ball up the field
resulting in a short run for a score. On their (Lions) next possession, they
threw an interception, but the Cards were not able to turn this into points.
In the second half, the Cards got things going in the right direction and their final destination was the end zone to tie the game up at 6. But the Lions had the final say, both on offense and defense. They again slowly moved the ball up the field, pounding it against the Cards defense and with 7:44 left in the fourth, they scored and took what would be winning touchdown. The Cards threatened late and got the ball within the 10 yard line but the Lions defense stopped them four straight times to hold on for the win. Final score: 12-6 (Lions).
NOTE:
VARSITY
In the final contest, it was all Chicago. For a minute or two, you would
have thought they were UPS, in which they scored on the ground as well as
through the air. On their first two possessions, the Cards scored on the
ground to take the early lead in which they never let go. Then in the second
half, they scored on a couple of screens, one for 65 yards, and the other
for 40 plus. The Lions were able to get on the board with a well-designed 45
yard halfback pass for a touchdown in the third quarter, but they were not
able to get on the board again.
NOTE:
Again, we would like to wish all of the Lions'
8th graders the best of everything since they will be moving on to high
school after this season. Keep up the good work.
