CPS-SUBURBAN SHOOTOUT at UIC
Crane 50, St. Charles North 45
Crane’s basketball team received some bad news on Wednesday, learning the school
is likely to be phased out and eventually closed. Despite that news the Cougars
were able to knock off St. Charles North 52-45 Saturday in the Chicago Public
Schools Shootout at the UIC.
“After all the things that have been going on around here this week we needed
something positive to happen for us,” Crane coach Chris Head said. “I’m really
pleased with the way the kids responded down the stretch. We’re playing without
three potential starters and the young guys really stepped up.”
Crane senior Willie Conner scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Quinten
Payne had 12 points and Kyle Nelson had 14 points and 10 rebounds for St.
Charles North.
Curie 81, Gary Bowman 71 (OT)
Indiana small powerhouse Bowman Academy came into the gym with one objection,
stop 6-foot-9 center Cliff Alexander. Well, they did that but the other players
stepped up for the Condors to snag a 81-71 victory in overtime.
Curie used an 11-3 run in the final three minutes of regulation to turn a 64-56
deficit into a 67-67 tie to take the game into overtime on two free throws by
Devin Foster.
In overtime, Bowman just couldn't get going and Curie forced three consecutive
turnovers and went on a 7-2 run to open up a 74-69 lead.
Devin Foster led all scorers with 30 points and seven boards followed by Joshua
Batson, who added 12.
According to Foster, it came down to size vs. quickness. “They were big and
strong and they wanted to be physical,” he said. “That did not bother us one
bit. Early in the game, we were playing it their way. Then we began to use our
quickness and blow pass them.”
Bowman's DePaul recruit Dejuan Marrero finished with 14 points for the Eagles.
Homewood-Flossmoor 57, Morgan Park 47
The only suburban victory on the day at the CPS - Suburban Shootout at UIC

including a 39-33 after three.
Their first double-digit lead of the game came on a basket by Delvon Rencher (14
points, 6 rebounds) with 4:36 remaining in the fourth quarter (45-35).
Morgan Park rallied back to a 6-point deficit, (49-43) led by senior guard Billy
Garrett Jr., but they could not get any closer.
“We played a very unselfish team game,” H-F coach Jim McLaughlin said. “They
suffered a heartbreaking loss against Bloom and that really got their
attention.”
Maurius Hill led the Vikings with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Tyrone
Sherman had 15 points and six assists.
McLaughlin singled out Sherman for his excellent play: “He has been a four-year
varsity player and this may be one of his best games. He ran the offense and
played some great defense on Garrett.”
Mustangs coach Nick Irvin said his team did not match Homewood-Flossmoor’s
intensity. “We did not run our offense and execute the way we know we can,” he
said. “Take nothing away from [H-F], I was very disappointed with the way we
played. We have to learn to be more aggressive, but we are a young team and we
will get better as time goes on.”
